Notes from the most recent BSG ("The Son Also Rises")

Really, just random notes & thoughts here. Not exactly well-formed paragraphs either; oh well.

BSG is starting to get good again; the season became less interesting after they left New Caprica, but with the impending trial of Baltar, and Kara's death (or "death") last episode, it's finally started to become must-watch again. This particular episode was really well done; the best-written one of the season.

The writing was really intriguing in several ways.

I think the relationship between Lee Adama and Sam was really neat. Sam had known there was "something" between Kara & Lee, which made the two of them something of unwilling rivals. It was really amazing to see the relationship between the two of them in this episode, because there were so many emotional reactions that could have come out. In the first scenes when Sam is drunk and grieving, I really expected him to go at Lee in a fit of misplaced rage at some point. But he never did; instead, there just seemed to be an understated acknowledgment from both of them of shared loss and pain. It's really fascinating: surprising in that it was not the expected or cliched emotional response, and yet it rang completely true to the characters.

That's absolutely the kind of writing that I adore. Original, surprising, character-centered, and moving.

I also loved the attention to detail paid to the characters. This new prosecutor of Baltar's is fantastic. He's very much a cocky, overly-charming con man archetype ... but they gave him a past, and regrets, and wonderful wonderful character quirks like kleptomania. I love love love the fact that he was a Questioner, and got into law because he wanted to understand people and WHY they make the choices they do, and therefore how to understand himself. I've always been fascinated by the reasons people do the things they do, and the philosophies they adhere to, and seeing this kind of "thinking about thinking", not just for its own sake but in helping inform the character, pushes all my buttons in exactly the right ways.

WTF--?!

Is this really only the second entry we've ever had in this journal/community?! And the only one talking about the content of the shows in question?!

C'MON PEOPLE! THAT'S A LOAD O' BALONEY!
